Social and Political Change academic group
The social and political change academic group brings together scholars from the former areas of international studies, social inquiry, school and adult education. The academic group shares a broad interest in the social bases of human behaviour, drawing on a range of social sciences - sociology, history, anthropology, cultural studies, political studies, political economy and cultural geography among others. One particular focus of the group, globalisation, has relevance for many members in both their research and teaching.
Teaching
Members of the group are involved in teaching in every program area of the Faculty.
While the majority are involved either with the BA Communication - social inquiry or international studies, the group also plays a pivotal role in the BA Global Studies. Members also teach into the adult education program and school education, and provide academic leadership in communication and adult education programs. There is a strong presence in indigenous studies.
Research
Members of the group belong to four of the Faculty/University research centres:
- China Research Centre
- Cosmopolitan Civil Societies
- Research in Learning and Change
- Transforming Cultures
They are founding members of the Indian Ocean and South Asia research network. The group has been very successful in attracting ARC Discovery grants, and publishes widely in a range of journals. Members are associated with innovation in research including multimedia, television and online projects. The group is well represented on the editorial boards of many international journals, and regularly report their work to international conferences. The China Research Centre is a major international focal point for research on class, organisations and culture in modern China. Postgraduate supervision is offered for traditional and non-traditional PhDs and MAs, for the Doctor of Creative Arts, and for the PhD submitted in Mandarin.
