Political scientist Professor Ujjwal Kumar Singh from the University of Delhi has joined UTS as the first Rajiv Gandhi Visiting Chair for Contemporary Indian Studies.

The chair, a collaborative venture between UTS and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, was announced last year during a visit to UTS by the former President of India Dr Abdul Kalam.

Under the agreement UTS will appoint an Indian academic as a visiting professor for one semester a year over four years, with a new candidate being selected each year.

UTS graduate school paves a new research path for journalism

A change in the definition of research in Australia has helped pave the way for the country's first Graduate School of Journalism being launched next week at UTS.

Head of the new school, Professor Alan Knight, said that after some years of lobbying from the profession the Australian Research Council (ARC) has redefined research to include quality journalism, allowing a research track record for reporters, editors and producers.

Peter Robb named 2012 CAL Non-Fiction Writer-in-Residence

Acclaimed and provocative Australian writer Peter Robb, whose book about the painter Caravaggio was a bestseller in Italy and America and divided critics in the UK, has been appointed the 2012 CAL Non-Fiction Writer-in-Residence at UTS.

Robb, who will take up his residency this month, will be attached to the Creative Practices Area in the UTS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, working with Master of Arts in Non-fiction Writing students as well as lecturing on narrative and non-fiction.

Graduating journalism student takes out Walkley Award

A closer look at social disadvantage in the Western Sydney suburb of Mt Druitt has led a recent UTS journalism graduate to win a 2011 Walkley Award for best online journalism.

The piece called Beating the Odds looked at the Mt Druitt community in shock after the disappearance of six-year-old school girl Kiesha Abrahams. The piece gave the audience an insight into the issues of public housing, unemployment and children at risk of social exclusion in the area.

Four teams of advertising students, including from UTS, have given Coeliac Australia plenty of ideas for boosting public recognition of the disease in the culmination of a national student competition.

The UTS team, UndergrAD, was one of four finalists this year in the International Advertising Association Big Idea competition which asked teams from around the country to come up with an integrated communications campaign for Coeliac Australia.

News reporting of physical activity sends socially skewed message

A new study of television news reporting reveals the media neglect key risks of inactivity and fail to focus attention on the responsibilities of employers and government to foster greater physical activity among Australians. Analysing the content of 91 television news and current affairs reports, the study led by UTS academic Catriona Bonfiglioli found the reports treated physical activity as soft news, rarely focused on children, and landed responsibility squarely on the individual.
