The availability of community-based supported playgroups can be an effective way of enhancing children's emergent literacies according to the results of a new study with Pacific communities in south-eastern Sydney.

Languages researchers from the University of Technology, Sydney have looked at the benefits of an organised community program that focuses on children's development of language, learning through play and their social interactions.

National study to improve patient safety in hospital handovers

Improving how doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals hand over information about patients in hospitals is the focus of a new national research project aiming to reduce the rate of critical incidents caused by communication breakdowns and misunderstandings.

The ECCHo project – Effective Clinical Communication in Handover: improving patient safety, experiences and outcomes – is being launched in Adelaide on Monday 14 November by South Australian Minister for Health John Hill.

Hope for substance-dependent mothers with young children

An innovative research project designed to break the destructive cycle of substance dependence among women with young children was launched at UTS this week. Leaders of the research project say that a new approach is necessary to focus on integrating parent and child-sensitive practice with mainstream rehabilitation. This is due to the close association between substance dependence, mental illness, trauma, deprivation and family break-up through generations.

Group learning strategies increase productivity

Large businesses could improve their productivity by implementing a peer group learning strategy according to the results of a recent UTS study in Indonesia. The study implemented workplace learning groups into the Indonesian Taxation Office to support tax officers during a period of organisational change.

Education policy has led to culturally unbalanced schools and potential social problems in the future according to a new paper by UTS researcher Dr Christina Ho. Analysing data from the My Schools website Dr Ho has contrasted the ethnicity within schools and the suburb in which they are located.

Overseas prac trip to Samoa

Students from the UTS Primary Education course tested their skills by venturing to the south pacific islands of Samoa for an international prac trip. The students taught in Falefitu, Vaivase & Tanugamanono Primary Schools under the direction of local teachers and tertiary supervisors. UTS conduct an optional international prac trip to Samoa, China or Thailand yearly as part of the professional experience subjects in 2nd or 3rd year.
