Political scientist the first Rajiv Gandhi Visiting Chair at UTS

Political scientist Professor Ujjwal Kumar Singh from the University of Delhi has joined UTS as the first Rajiv Gandhi Visiting Chair for Contemporary Indian Studies.

The chair, a collaborative venture between UTS and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, was announced last year during a visit to UTS by the former President of India Dr Abdul Kalam.

Under the agreement UTS will appoint an Indian academic as a visiting professor for one semester a year over four years, with a new candidate being selected each year.

Gehry's vision gets NSW government approval

Frank Gehry's first Australian building, UTS's Dr Chau Chak Wing Building, has received planning approval from the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure.

"This is a major milestone in the design of an Australian architectural icon," said UTS Vice-Chancellor Professor Ross Milbourne. "We welcome this approval: it brings us one step closer to creating a world-class education precinct in Sydney's southern CBD."

New NMR device means power upgrade for UTS research

UTS research to understand disease states such as cancer will be boosted by the launch of a new $1.2million nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) device for the Faculty of Science. The machine, which will be installed in a new NMR facility in November, is the latest benefit of a long-standing partnership between Professor Philip Doble and Agilent Technologies. The 500 megahertz instrument will replace the current NMR in UTS's possession – a 20year old 300 megahertz machine – with a resulting boost in capabilities that will benefit research across the faculty.

Expert midwives to build foundation for better maternal health in PNG

A program targeting midwifery education in Papua New Guinea has been launched to accelerate the country's progress towards Millennium Development Goals for improved maternal health.

Funded by AusAID, the $US10 million program will provide support over two years to improve maternal health outcomes through supporting high quality midwifery education.

UTS elite athlete Pat Cummins saves Australia

UTS Elite Athlete Program scholar and Bachelor of Business student Patrick Cummins recently made his test debut with the Australia Cricket Team in South Africa. 

As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald on the 22 November, he "saved Australia" and with his man of the match performance, led Australia to victory over the South African team.

Sailing to success

International collaboration for malaria cure

A leading disease researcher from the United Kingdom has joined forces with scientists at UTS's ithree institute and Sydney University to better understand and find a cure for malaria. Professor Alastair Craig from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine is currently in Sydney meeting with UTS researchers. The collaboration will seek to discover why some people with malaria develop severe symptoms with a high risk of death while others experience milder illness.
