New study suggests ocean's plankton under greater threat from acidification
New research from the UK and Australia suggests that changes in the ocean's chemistry, as a result of global warming, could threaten organisms such as marine plankton to a greater extent than previously thought.
Dr Mark Baird, a Research Fellow with The Plant Functional Biology and Climate Change Cluster (C3) is a member of the international team researching ocean acidification and the changes it causes in the pH levels at the exterior surface of plankton.
Fellowship first
Researchers at the UTS ithree institute have been undertaking pioneering work with Cochlear since 2006. The collaboration has now resulted in the 12-month appointment of UTS researcher Rosalia Cavaliere as the first ever Cochlear Research Fellow.
Research in the blood
In only a short time, Karieshma Kabani has amassed an incredible number of scientific and research achievements. She has had five articles published in major journals, presented papers at more than 20 local, national and international scientific conferences and undertaken research that may have implications for future cancer studies.
New books advocate 'open source' model for nanotechnology
Nanotechnology research should not be automatically harnessed to commercial objectives according to the UTS author and co-editor of two new books assessing the field's potential contribution to addressing worldwide social and environmental problems.
ithree Scientist takes out award for work on “Golden Staph”
Andrew Liew, a third year postgraduate science student based at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) ithree institute has been chosen as the 2012 winner of the NSW branch Becton Dickinson Australian Society for Microbiology (ASM) Student Travel Award.
Understanding the ocean's tiny climate makers
Microscopic phytoplankton are at the base of the ocean's food chain, but that's not the only way they support other life. The role these marine microorganisms play in regulating climate is the interest of newly appointed UTS Chancellor's Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Dr Katherina Petrou.
Dr Petrou will use her background in phytoplankton photobiology and physiology to research the impacts of light and UV radiation on sulphur production in phytoplankton, gathering new knowledge on the role of sulphur in phytoplankton photosynthesis.
Honours coral research leads to Red Sea experience
One of just 50 students, and the only Australian, selected as part of an international poster competition for undergraduate students, Davina’s research highlights the biodiversity value and unique habitat of these rare soft corals.
